Monica E. Polcz, MD, MS, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified general surgeon with specialized expertise in Complex Hernia and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, including both open and minimally invasive (robotic) techniques. Dr. Polcz is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. Her clinical practice centers on gastrointestinal surgery and complex hernia repairs. She prioritizes quality and individualized care through multidisciplinary relationships, a detail-oriented approach, and joint-decision making to ensure her patients feel involved in every step of their surgical care and recovery. Dr. Polcz completed her advanced GI and minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Atrium Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. with a specialized focus on complex abdominal wall reconstruction. During her surgical residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center she completed a Master’s degree in biomedical engineering while conducting research supported by an NIH F32 grant. Dr. Polcz is an active member of several national surgical societies, including the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Hernia Society (AHS), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). Through these societies, she has served on numerous committees and participated in the development of surgical guidelines. She has also served as part of the hernia content team for the well-known surgery podcast “Behind the Knife”.
Her clinical practice centers on complex hernia repairs and abdominal wall reconstruction, with a particular interest in improving patient outcomes. Dr. Polcz has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and authored several chapters in major surgical textbooks. Dr. Polcz is committed to advancing surgical care through research, education, and continuous improvement in clinical practice, with the goal of optimizing outcomes for patients facing complex abdominal conditions.
